Your first acrylic set: what to expect at Sugarcoat

If you’ve never had acrylics — or it’s been years — the chair can feel like a big unknown. This is what a first visit with me at Sugarcoat By Jess looks like, so you can book without guessing.

I work from Kittens Got Claws on Victoria Street in Spalding. Appointments are one-to-one. You’re not rushed through a row of lamps.

Before you come in

You don’t need to prep much. Natural nails that are clean and free of old gel or acrylic are ideal. If you already have a set on, say so when you book — we’ll add time for a soak-off.

Wear something you don’t mind a little dust on, and bring a photo if you have a shape or colour in mind. A screenshot from Instagram is fine. If you don’t have one, we’ll choose together.

New clients get 20% off the first visit. Mention it in the booking notes so it’s on the appointment.

We’ll start with your real life, not a trend

The prettiest set is the one you can live in. I’ll ask:

• How long you want them
• Square, squoval, almond, or coffin
• Colour, French, or a bit of art
• Whether you type all day, lift little ones, or work with your hands

If you want extra-long stilettos and you open tins for a living, I’ll be honest. We can still do something pretty — just balanced so it doesn’t snap on week two.

How long it takes

A full set with gel polish is the usual first appointment. Allow a couple of hours. French, ombré, or detailed art adds time.

We’ll:

1. Look at the natural nail and talk through the design
2. Prep (cuticle work, dehydrate, primer)
3. Sculpt the acrylic to your shape and length
4. File, refine, and finish with gel colour or French
5. Add art if you’ve chosen it
6. Oil and a final check in the light

You can chat, sit quietly, or scroll. There’s no test. The only job on your side is to say if something feels too long or too thick before we finish.

What it should feel like when you leave

Not sore. Not throbbing. A little “oh, they’re there” is normal for a day or two if you’ve gone longer than your natural nails.

If anything is sharp, catching, or painful, tell me before you go. I’d rather file for two minutes than have you picking at it on the bus.

Take it easy for the first 24 hours — no marathon washing-up session. After that, look after them like this.

Infills are part of the set, not a failure

Nails grow. In two to three weeks you’ll see a gap at the cuticle. That’s your reminder to book an infill, not a sign the set has gone wrong.

First-timers often wait too long. Put the infill in the diary before you leave if you can. It’s cheaper, quicker, and kinder to the natural nail than letting them grow into diving boards.

Wednesday to Friday I’m 9:30am–6:00pm. Saturday is 10:00am–2:00pm.
